Now it’s really, really, really over. This message appeared on the Montclair Unmoderated message board in the wee hours this morning from Jerry Mosier, who’d entered into an election bet with fellow Unmod participant Thom Kennon in September (photo from September). Under the terms of the bet, if Bush lost the election then Mosier would have to contribute $100 (total) to two liberal organizations of Kennon’s choice. If Kerry lost, Kennon would have to contribute $100 (total) to two conservative causes of Mosier’s choice. The idea was that the loser would receive junk mail from the other side in perpetuity.
Mosier has named the Republican National Committee and the National Rifle Association (ouch!) as the designees. Kennon will have to send $50 to each.
I am now able to confirm that yesterday I received a gracious congratulatory
email from Thom Kennon, in which he conceded the election (bet) . I replied
that he ran an honorable campaign, and he then urged me to spend the next
four years striving to be a uniter, not a divider. I thanked him for his service
to our listserv, and noted that he is a pretty good guy after all. His fans are
notably despondent, yet he has communicated that he will go on fighting the
good fight. here and elsewhere.
To wit, now that I can safely and confidently claim victory, here are the final results – Thom contribute the sum of $50 to the Republican National Committee – he will also supply photocopies of said check contribution and a copy of the letter of thanks he will receive from the RNC upon their receipt of said funds. In addition, the second $50 contribution shall be sent to the National Rifle Association, again same terms as listed above.
Upon my return – I will supply Thom with addresses, and contact information for his generous contributions.
Jerry
Thom-
Now, your job is to rob the RNC and NRA. Whenever they send you soliciations, put something heavy in the envelope and mail it back. They pay for it. One man can surely drain these two evil institutions
I am in Thom’s camp all the way. And so I have offered to give my proportional share of this debt in order to help him pay off the bet and honor our cause, as gentlemen.
Other contributions are welcome.
Please forward all donations to the quintessentially trustworthy and ever neutral Barista of Bloomfield Avenue.
Any donations forwarded to the Barista will be enjoyed as tips by the Barista.
Check it out — this detente meeting was conducted over vast quantities of our favorite beverage, in the Barista’s generously sized mugs.
UPDATE:
Please make all checks out to Thom Kennon!
Just so we’re clear, Raymmmondo – your proportional share of the $100 comes out to about $425, if my new Bush-economy-what-about-me math is right.
I too will be supplementing ol’ Thom’s financial cost, but I’m doing it by sharing a bottle of Jameson’s with him.
Paul Simon’s ‘American Tune’:
Many’s, the time I’ve been mistaken
And many times confused
Yes, and often felt forsaken
And certainly misused
But I’m all right, I’m all right
I’m just weary to my bones
Still, you don’t expect to be
Bright and bon vivant
So far away from home, so far away Irom home
And I don’t know a soul who’s not been battered
I don’t have a friend who feels at ease
I don’t know a dream that’s not been shattered
or driven to its knees
But it’s all right, it’s all right
We’ve lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the road
we’re traveling on
I wonder what went wrong
I can’t help it, I wonder what went wrong
And I dreamed I was dying
And I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly
And looking back down at me
Smiled reassunngly
And I dreamed I was flying
And high up above my eyes could clearly see
The Statue of Liberty
Sailing away to sea
And I dreamed I was flying
We come on the ship they call the Mayflower
We come on the ship that sailed the moon
We come in the age’s most uncertain hour
and sing an American tune
But it’s all right, it’s all right
You can’t be forever blessed
Still, tomorrow’s going to be another working day
And I’m trying to get some rest
That’s all I’m trying to get some rest
And Moot, so WE’RE clear too, using the newly legitamized Halliburton rules of inventory and supply chain management calculations, your proportional share of the bet comes out to a case of Jameson. 12 year old, please.
Mosier is one of my good friends, notwithstanding many of his political views but you couldn’t get me to write a check to the NRA if you, well, held a gun to my head.

If that is truly the new standard, then I’ll be getting the Jameson’s No Bid.
Just to keep everyone informed:
Now with New Mexico and Iowa fully counted (and they went to Bush)
Looks like the final tally is
52% Bush
47% Kerry
a 5% Difference and a total of 4.5 Million votes + for Bush.
oops.

Big deal. That’s no landslide, no mandate. Unless you compare it with the razor-thin way Bush “won” in 2000.
In order to assuage some of Thom’s pain and suffering I will upon my return the US gladly treat him to a dinner – place to be determined. If he chooses only to consumer 12 year old Jameson, rather than partake of any foodstuffs that will be fine by me..
Not gloating, I am sincerely yours,
