Coming soon to a neighborhood near you: more people. Left, Montclair Community Hospital, to be torn down and replaced by luxury townhouses. Below (left), the old Matchless Metals property in Glen Ridge, being developed as condos by Curt Schade and Steve Plofker, and (right) Glen Ridge’s former Verizon building, now being demolished to make way for luxury townhouses and condos — some with pricetags as high as $1.3 million. Don’t come complaining to us if, in a few years, we wind up hearing the pitter patter of little
feet tax burdens.

I’m assuming Curt Schade has alot of money left over due to his under assesed current residence. Maybe the madated revaluation will bring his property in line and give us all a much needed reduction in the current property tax.
Wonder what the taxes will be on those new “townhomes” (Gad I hate that “word”) and whether it’ll be enough to offset the schooling of the children that’ll be living there.
did anybody look into turning the montclair community hospital into a school building? would it have been that hard?
Although I do not live in Montclair, I do shop there on a regular basis. I am shuddering at the thought of what that new school is going to do to the already congested traffic in that area. I hope that they are planning on putting in some additional traffic lights. It seems to me that a more logical place to put a new school would have been where the Community Hospital is/was – did this ever get looked into? or was it another case of NIMN?
You left out the Silk Mill loft conversion in the old Annin Flag Blg. on N. Fulton St., the 8 new 2-families on Willow St., the conversion of the Peerless Tube factory on Locust St to 24 new condos, the Toll Brothers 200 new condos on Washington St., all within the same little neighborhood in Bloomfield’s Watsessing Heights. Talk about the potential for traffic congestion…
I’m glad someone decided to do something about the dangerous eyesores (Hospital and Matchless)
I can’t believe anyone would prefer to have abandoned buildings rather than housing.
Whatever happened, though, to the idea of getting businesses to locate here to expand our tax base? That will never happen if we continute to tear down buildings to make way for condos.
Montclair needs ratables, Glen Ridge too. Soon all of the open land will be consumed by condos or homes on small lots.
Despite the marketing, I expect that the hospital, Hahne’s and Marlboro Inn sites will attract families with children, adding additional burdens to the school system and the taxpayers.

Speaking as a resident of GR, I don’t think anyone living there would expect businesses to expand there. There is no room for businesses.
