One man’s trip to a local church on one of the holiest days of the year ended in a brutal beating…
On Christmas Day, at around 8 p.m., an 81-year-old man from Newark was driving along Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair looking for St. Francis Church. The driver became confused and stopped to ask a man for directions. The man got into the elderly man’s car and directed him to Hartley Street. Once there, the man told the driver to get out of the car and proceeded to beat the driver about the head and face with a wooden cane. The assailant stole the keys to the car and the driver’s wallet containing approximately $180. The suspect is described as a white or Hispanic male, 45 – 50 years, muscular build, light skinned, with no facial hair. He was wearing a black jacket, black hat and walked with a limp. The victim was treated by the Glen Ridge ambulance unit but refused further treatment.

  1. My God! What the hell has happened to to the world? What ever happened to respecting your elders? It’s become an animal state.

  2. it has NOT become “an animal state” PAWS is being evisted and the Bukowski shelter in Bloomfield has been taken over by evil aliens who are euthanizing animals!

  3. That’s an awful story. There are some real creeps out there.
On a different note, I didn’t know that about PAWS or the Bloomfield shelter. That’s awful on both counts. I adopted a cat from Bloomfield a couple of years ago and they were a “no kill” at that time. Very unfortunate that they’ve changed their policy.

  4. Montclair IS a crimehub.
Screw the wayfaring signs, I want more cops and video surveilance cameras on the street.

  5. What ever happened to the neighborhood watch program?
I say we start them in each Montclair neighborhood. Too much stuff is happening and I am tired of feeling threatened in my own town.

  6. Does the dolt who wrote about petakills know that that website is part of the Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF), a group established by a tobacco lobbiest?
CCF is one of the more active of several front groups created by Berman & Co., a public affairs firm owned by lobbyist Rick Berman. Based in Washington, DC, Berman & Co. represents the tobacco industry as well as hotels, beer distributors, taverns, and restaurant chains. Hotels, motels, restaurants, bars and taverns together comprise the “hospitality industry,” which has long been cultivated by the tobacco industry as a third party to help slow or stop the progression of smokefree laws.
CCF actively opposes smoking bans and lowering the legal blood-alcohol level, while targeting studies on the dangers of red meat consumption, overfishing and pesticides. Each year they give out the “nanny awards” to groups who, according to them, try to tell consumers how to live their lives.
Anyone who criticizes tobacco, alcohol, fatty foods or soda pop is likely to come under attack from CCF. Its enemies list has included such diverse groups and individuals as the Alliance of American Insurers; the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons; the American Medical Association; the Arthritis Foundation; the Consumer Federation of America; New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani; the Harvard School of Public Health; the Marin Institute for the Prevention of Alcohol and Other Drug Problems; the National Association of High School Principals; the National Safety Council; the National Transportation Safety Board; the Office of Highway Safety for the state of Georgia; Ralph Nader’s group, Public Citizen; the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); and the U.S. Department of Transportation.

  7. Who the hell cares about CCF, PETA, and transfats ???
Wake up you bleeding morons. Montclair has a serious crime problem on it’s hands !!!!

  8. OK, so tell us how to solve it. There’s nothing that will ease violent crime more than blogging.

  9. Umm, it would help if there were police presence here in town. I have lived a lot of places and never have i seen so FEW cops on the streets. Where ARE they?

  10. Does anyone recall when a Mayor Daly of Chicago told his police force to “Shoot to Kill” ?? It’s need here, in Essex County, now. Look at Orange with that 80 year old man & now this in Montclair and that in South Orange & this in West Orange.
Only town in the county still safe is Essex Fells, amybeeee Livingston.

There are approx 120 police officers in Montclair.
Of those 15 or so are detectives (leaving 105)
It is my understanding that there are only 33 or so on patrol throughout Montclair (for all shifts).
Is the police department really that top heavy?

  12. I don’t have a problem with tobacco, alcohol, fatty foods or soda pop. Don’t like em much but nobody is forcing them down my throat. If you can’t help indulging yourself, seek professional help. Interesting post otherwise, but it doesn’t change the FACT that PETA kills large numbers of animals and supports domestic terrorists. They suck!
