You read it in comments here. It’s also cropped up here and at National Review’s The Corner. It sounded too good to be true. The biggest cliffhanger — when will David Chase come out of hiding and actually comment on all of this. Meanwhile, the theory seems to have started on the HBO forums.
Meanwhile, Off The Broiler has the onion rings (shown above) and lots of other food porn from Holstens here.

  1. I love Baristanet and all, but 7 of the last 8 posts have been about the Sopranos. I realize that the Sopranos are big in Jersey, and that the finale was a big deal for fans, but not everyone watches it…

  2. Seriously, did nothing else happen in Baristaville this weekend?
Did I inadvertently take some really good drugs and imagine the goings on with Church Street and the Farmers’ Market this weekend?
Did no one get shot IN REAL LIFE?
    Enough with the stupid Sopranos!

  3. agree…did anything happen in Baristaville today? (what happened to my other message? it wasn’t blank what I hit post.)

  4. If you have news to report then send it in. This site can be what you make of it.
Im not a huge fan of the Sopranos but Im not a fan of whiners either.

  5. Nice to see a burger and ice cream joint surviving the McDonalds-ization of NJ. When I was a kid in Livingston we could go to any number of such places: Don’s in Millburn (or was it West Orange?), Jahn’s in Union, Bond’s in Millburn-Short Hills (yes, Dons – Jahns – Bonds). I think there was a Bonds also in Verona and one in Montclair.
Then Grunnings up on top of the mountain on Mt. Pleasant Ave. and the Sip & Sup in Springfield. Etc.

  6. Why didn’t Meadow park in the bank parking lot like everone else does? So much for keeping it real.

  7. Hiding in U Barista – HA!
I can always count on this place for laughs at any time of day.

  8. Can you even park where she did? I don’t think so- too near the corner- I’ll drive by later and check.

I’ll fix it up for ya, John…
Grunnings was on South Orange Avenue in Maplewood, on the South Orange boundry,
Dons’s was on South Orange Avenue in Livingston, Gary’s was on Springfield Avenue in Maplewood, Stanley’s was on Morris Avenue in Springfiled (last one to go out of business, BTW), Jahns on Stuvysant Ave in Union, (home of the Kitchen Sink) and Bonds was in Elizabeth on Broad as well as on Blmfd ave IN Verona ! (home of the Awful, awful !)
    There were others, too….
Clark & Linden had Bonds, as well.

  10. Thanks, Sandy. There was a Bonds in Millburn on the old Rt. 24. That’s one we went to a lot. There was also “Don’s Drive-In” in Madison, a satellite location of the main Don’s which you correctly locate in Livingston, come to think of it. They actually had the waitresses on skates and the car window trays.
I guess my brain arteries hardened up from all that deep-fried cholesterol.

  11. ‘Ya, I know, I just about “lived” at Dons ! I recall it all. So sad it all had to end. We are about the same age – that’s for sure!! My 1963 Impala Super Sport convertible, the Beach Boys on Cousin Brucie singing “I get around” and chocolate malts & Don’s burgers (Still unmatched)! and that red relish. Recall ? All of them were great. It was a grand time in the scheme of things….and then….Viet Nam threw ice water on it all.
FYI, Gary’s Son (of Gary’s Restaurant on Springfiled Ave in Mplwd) owns a restaurant up in Boonton. Haven’t been – heard it’s very good.

  12. Was Gary the place with ribs? They used to have an old tv commercial saying “Gary’s is the best”.
It would air on TV 3 during Rascal’s COmedy Hour.
    Those were the days.

  13. I was trying to find out if anyone knows when Grunnings in SO Orange Village closed? We called it in the 60’s Grunnings in the Village, and then the one up So Orange Ave was Grunnings at the top. There are Luxury Condos there now. Then there was also a Bonds on Upper Valley Rd in Montclair. I grew up in WO, but knew these places. I was just telling my neighbor, that we use to go sledding on Floods Hill, then to Grunnings in the Village for hot cocoa. Gary’s had a place around the corner from Pals Cabin (WO, and still there)on Eagle Rock Av, as well as the place on Springfield Av in Maplewood. There still is (as far as I know) a genuine ice cream place in Montclair called Applegate Farm. They seemed to have survived the fast food industry!
Again, if anyone knows the years that Grunnings closed the Village and At the Top Locations, please let me know. Thanks!
