As if all the booze wouldn’t make driving treacherous enough, an “arctic airmass” will bring “snow and blowing snow” today, says the National Weather Service. In addition to the weather, police will be out in force in 92 towns, including Montclair and Glen Ridge, looking for drunk drivers. It’s a combination that says “reading in front of the fire” to me.
SNOW WILL BEGIN EARLY THIS MORNING… POSSIBLY MIXING WITH OR CHANGING TO RAIN DURING THE MID TO LATE MORNING. THE PRECIPITATION WILL CHANGE TO ALL SNOW BY EARLY THIS AFTERNOON… WITH A BURST OF MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW EXPECTED BEFORE TAPERING OFF LATE IN THE AFTERNOON. NORTHWEST WINDS WILL RAPIDLY INCREASE THIS AFTERNOON… USHERING AN ARCTIC AIRMASS INTO THE REGION. THIS IS EXPECTED TO CAUSE A FLASH FREEZE OF ANY SLUSH OR WATERS ON ROADWAYS WHICH WILL MAKE FOR TREACHEROUS ROAD CONDITIONS DURING THE EVENING COMMUTE. IN ADDITION A BRIEF PERIOD OF SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED VISIBILITIES ARE POSSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON WITH ANY FALLING SNOW AND STRONG WINDS. TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 TO 3 INCHES IS EXPECTED… WITH HIGHEST AMOUNTS THE FURTHER AWAY FROM THE OCEAN.
A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW… SLEET… OR FREEZING RAIN WILL CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SLIPPERY ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES… AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING.
It’s been snowing in Pine Brook for the last hour.
At this point I’m just hoping it lets up enough for me to go out on my lunch break and get something entertaining with the Best Buy giftcard I got for Christmas. :-/
Do you think Montclair will have the roads clear for First Night? That will be fun trying to navigate the venues tonight.
I think that’s the end of the snow…just a dusting here in Bloomfield.
First…Happy and Safe New year to all…
I’ll be part of a two camera crew covering Montclair’s First Night Party…it’ll be cold, and windy..but the show must go on..
So, if you see me walking around, stop over and say Hi, and wish everyone a Happy New Year to be on our local Tv channel.
See you tonight.
Mission success!
So, while the rest of you people are out their freezing your tushes off; I shall eshew the perils of slick roads and drunk drivers while enjoying the animated mayhem of my latest video game purchase. 🙂
GNM, smart move. After a close call more than 25 years ago, gave up going anywhere on NYE. Plenty of parties the rest of the year, this is stay at home night as a “tradition” and I highly recommend it. Make a new gourmet meal for the first time, play a game and party without worry, can be very enjoyable.
Whatever you decide to do, best wishes and a happy, healthy toast for the year to come.
When I was a kid in Bergen County, many of the local Protestant churches stayed open for what they called “Watch Night” this evening. Come midnight, they all rang their bells and all the towns shot off their fire sirens. Made for an evening when it was impossible to retire early and then STAY abed. But it was kind of fun, the Baptists and he Presbies “partying” in their own fashion and the Papists still running midnight masses back then.
And East Rutherford and Carlstadt’s many bars were always pretty lively places too. Al Hibbler (who had the original hit version of “Unchained Melody”) played at a place in ER called Ace Fallon’s and for almost 3 years friends and I split a weekend job picking him up from NYC at the Rutherford bus station and then driving him back to it and making sure he got on the bus at 2:30 AM, because he was blind and tippled a wee bit. It is not near as “wild” as it used to seem so long ago, I think. That might even be a good thing.
There was also an ordinance back then in Hudson County (probably aimed at hookers) which forbade unescorted women from sitting at bars. The only exception allowed was for New Year’s Eve.
I wish as prosperous and happy a 2009 as possible to all.
Cathar….The unescorted women were allowed to sit in the backroom and imbibe.
PAZ, you had nothing better to do round 10PM last night than post? And you were around Bayonne and Jersey City in the 50’s, old enough to be legally served yourself?
