Scott Buchanan, West Orange resident and Montclair State University graduate student is entered in a contest to win a $17,000 scholarship. The SolvayCARES scholarship was created to honor college students with cystic fibrosis (CF)
“Looking backwards I don’t ever remember a time in my life when Cystic Fibrosis wasn’t there,” Buchanan said.
He was diagnosed with CF at the age of two.
The 26-year-old submitted a slide show of photographs he took during the past three years at the Cape Cod National Seashore where he did research.
His research involves radio tracking eastern hognose snakes to learn more about their natural history and to help resource managers develop a conservation plan for the species. “By shedding light on what kind of habitats they use, when, how and why, my study is an important component of efforts to ensure that populations of this animal are sustained through the Northeast in perpetuity,” Buchanan said.
If Buchanan wins the scholarship, he plans on making a $500 donation to the N.J. State Organization of CF. “NJSOCF is an organization that has assisted me in a number of ways in the past ten years or so,” he said. “But please understand that $17,000 is not nearly enough to cover all the expenses of graduate school and a thesis project.”
