East Orange police officer Kareem Spence, 34, of South Plainfield was arrested and indicted on charges of arson, insurance fraud, and attempted theft by deception, Essex County Prosecutor’s office announced.
Spence was arrested today, March 31, at approximately 10:30 am at East Orange Police Headquarters after a three-count indictment was unsealed on March 30, 2010.
The indictment charges that Spence, who has been with the East Orange Police Department for approximately six years, set his 2002 Cadillac Coupe DeVille on fire on May 2, 2009 in Irvington to collect insurance money. Allegedly, gasoline soaked towels were discovered in the trunk of the vehicle, where the blaze started.
If convicted of all the charges, Spence faces up to 25 years in prison. Bail was set at $25,000; Spence is being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility.
And in other police news, a grand jury said Caldwell police officer Darryl Elder, 37, was justified in shooting and killing a man who had just stabbed his girlfriend.

  1. Stellar reporting outside of the fact that the person shot by police was Daryl Elder, he was not the police officer. Minor detail.

  2. Incarcerated fuzz spends it’s time in ‘Punk City’, kept out of GP for saftey reasons.

  3. The Caldwell DV Grand Jury finding should have read that Elders repeatedly stabbed his girlfriend and then held the cops at bay resulting in the murder of his girlfriend…the bastard should get a shot in the arm!

Well according to Annette (who’s really outdone herself on this one!) Elders IS the cop and the cop’s girlfriend was the one stabbed.

  5. I think a correction is in order. Elders is not the police officer, according to the NJ.com story. He was the one who stabbed his girlfriend and then held police at bay. The officer was Marc Driggs, who shot Elders–justifiably, according to the Grand Jury.
Or maybe Annette has additional reporting that blows the lid off this thing. April Fools!
