  1. so Herb, did you finally protest this liberal green building trend and tear out your insulation yet?
Wouldn’t want to be too green, now, would ya, not even on St. Patty’s Day.

Most of these old houses don’t have insulation in the walls – some in the attic – but that’s about all.
Funny story. When my old landlord was renovating our apartment outside Boston he tore open the walls to insulate and hang drywall. Inside he found all kids of cool stuff – hat pins, some weirdo can of oil, and newspaper. Tons and tons of newspaper.
I don’t know if they left that stuff inside as a message to the future, makeshift insulation or an attempt to light the house on fire (oil + 80 year old newspaper + 80 year old wiring = FIRE!) but it was pretty cool.

  3. I think ‘back then’ they used to use to stuff insulation in the walls for insulation. Now thats recycling.

  4. Actually Herb, if you go back far enough, you’ll find old homes with an interior and exterior layer of thick stone packed full with manure. Excellent insulation and soundproofing. Free materials, too.

  5. Spiro, I’d imagine that might get a bit fragrant, especially during the warmer months.
