As we closed out Gay Pride Month, it seemed fitting to ‘gay up’ Baristaville a bit.


Now I know that many of you were all caught up with our Russian spies these past few days and so maybe you missed the coverage of the NYC Gay Pride March.
And by the way, I looked closely at the picture (ok, it’s a drawing) and I am telling you that I saw that guy in the red shirt. I think it was at my favorite Montclair restaurant, Greek Delights. I think he ordered the gigantes. But I’m not sure. But what I do know is that I bet he knew what I ordered. I mean. Come on. He is a spy!
I digress.
For all of you who did not make it to the Pride Parade, the only photo you might have seen was this one.

I have a lot of feelings about gay pride coverage but this year I took matters into my own hands.
Here, for all the gay and lesbian people in Baristaville and all of you who love us, is my own pride slideshow. It was published on the front page of The Huffington Post but I’ll make it easier for you. Watch below.
And as we move back into the other 11 hetero-pride months of the year, many thanks to Baristaville for being a place where everyone is welcome. Straight, gay, even Russian.

  3. My memory may be off, but in February did anyone try to “African-American up” baristanet? Or “Black up,” whichever you prefer…
    Likewise, forgive me if I view this entire post as a digression.

  4. Good point, prof. In light of this oversight, I view this entire item as racist. I demand a retraction and an apology.

Not racist, just dumb, unfunny and offensive (because if anyone else sought to “gay up” something they would be pilloried; understand I have no problem with group members, when speaking to other group members, use the most derogatory terms to each other, BUT when presented to those outside the group, it’s unseemly and calls into question that idea that certain words and terms are taboo.)

  7. I agree, cathar. The prof is tops in my book. I was just taking his valid point to the juvenile extreme. That’s what God put me here for.

  8. Last time I checked, the word ‘gay’ was not a derogatory term. Ditto ‘black’ and ‘African-American.’
    I don’t think anyone would have complained if a poster had written lightly during the month of February that he/she was going to “African-American” things up a little for Black History Month. So Cathar, I don’t think there’s a perfectly valid point here, or really any point at all…

  9. If you don’t think the prof, the good prof, was making a valid point, katebirdrex (and perhaps also being a bit sneakily witty), then perhaps you’re simply lacking in reading comprehension abilities this fine day.
    “So” back, then. And kudos to the prof for his usual willingness to take on the shibboleths which commonly pass for talk of “diversity” in Baristaville.
    Oh, and happy Blessed Junipero Serra day, too.

    Really?
    SO its OK to be racist or derogatory if you stay within “ones group”?
    Are we talking about the “human group” or should everything still be determined by color or nationality? maybe even Economics?
    Frightning and foolish.

  15. Who said anything about BEING racist or derogatory? I said use those words.
    There’s a difference.
    And NO, I’m not taking about the human group (or the human fund, for that matter). I’m talking without a self identifiable group (race, ethic, sex preference, gender, etc.)
    But really, is there where I’m supposed to believe that Black folks are the only ones who act, speak and call themselves derogatory names when alone? Those times I’ve heard women, Jewish folks, or Italian Americans say those words were just, what? (And isn’t part of the dust up over Jersey Shore based on just this point?)
    And in case you haven’t noticed, folks are determined and grouped by EVERYTHING you listed and more. Hell just look at the comments about whether the new towns are “suitable” for baristanet.

    And, for what it’s worth, when I lived on Charles Street…I marched in the parade as a straight guy proud of my Gay family members.
