The Montclair Police Department issued a warning today to Montclair High School students who don’t use the sidewalks or the crosswalks walking to and from school. Principal James Earle sent this letter to parents on Tuesday:
Dear Students / Parents / Guardians:
We have been contacted by the Montclair Police Department regarding a safety issue concerning our students. There are reports of students walking in the middle of the streets surrounding MHS, especially James Street, during the lunch periods. The police have received numerous complaints from the public about the potential for serious injury to the students as well as the inconvenience and frustration to drivers navigating the area.
Beginning on Monday November 22, 2010, officers of the Traffic Division will be out in the area concentrating on this issue. They will be giving warnings to the students as well as issuing summonses.
Under the NJ-Motor Vehicle Code Title 39 the following will be issued:
39:4-34-Failure to use sidewalks where provided.
The cost of this infraction is $54.00.There will also be a mandatory court appearance.We are giving you advanced notice of this upcoming change and ask that you speak with your child and join us in encouraging them to follow the rules to avoid receiving a summons.

What “change”? This has always been the law. And “avoiding” a summons? WHO CARES? parents should warm their kids about the potential HARM… Or is bring up that they may be hit by a car going to hurt their fragile egos and hamper their chances of going to an Ivy?
This just might be the revenue source the town has been searching for.
If they ride their bikes in the street, Fried will issue a pardon.
