The Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges (Livingston, NJ) has become the first YMCA in the New Jersey region to offer a new prevention initiative. The YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program (YDPP) is co-sponsored by Y-USA and United Health Care.
The program will establish small groups of people who are pre-diabetic or at high risk for diabetes. These groups will meet at various locations throughout the Metro YMCAs’ communities and will work with trained Lifestyle Coaches to address a variety of pertinent issues, e.g. weight loss, healthy eating and behavior modification, all with the goal of greatly reducing the risk of Type 2 Diabetes. The program is expected to expand to the Montclair Y in the Fall of 2011.
Jennifer Shukaitis has been appointed Regional Coordinator for the YDPP at the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges. She will be responsible for implementation of the program, supervise daily operations, provide training and support for the lifestyle coaches and ensure the quality of the program at the Metro YMCAs’ multiple branches. She will act as a liaison for YDPP with public health officials and healthcare professionals, and will work with them to establish a system of referrals to the YDPP.
“This is an exciting program for our Y,” said Richard Gorab, President and CEO of the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges. “We have the opportunity to truly aid those experiencing this serious health issue, and it fits in with our focus on Healthy Lifestyle and Social Responsibilities as part of being a cause-driven Y.”

I added a comment earlier but it didn’t seem to take.
Nice Q&A, Joe and Joy (hmmm, maybe you two should have a column…)
Just one correction: Patch launched in Maplewood on Feb. 4, 2009, while The Local launched in March 2009.
Also, though I know you’re not necessarily referring to Patch, Patch does have oversight of content with editors, assistant regional editors, regional editors and so on. So, no-one is left alone to cover a Township Committee meeting without guidance or editing.
Okay, clearly I’m a moron. This comment was meant for another post AND the original comment is showing up on that post. NEVERMIND!
