My top three absolute favorite musicians in the Family Music genre are Dan Zanes and Friends, They Might Be Giants and Elizabeth Mitchell and You Are My Flower. Yes, there are many other talented kindie rockers out there, but with these three you have all your bases covered.
I’m especially fond of Elizabeth Mitchell and her family (the You Are My Flower part), because in addition to her beautiful folk music, she is warm, kind and truly loves what she does. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know her and would say I even consider her a friend. She has welcomed my daughters on stage with her many times and welcomed my family to Woodstock for a weekend so my girls could be part of an upcoming DVD.
Her gentle, heartfelt music transfixes audiences of all ages with homespun renditions of great songs by Woody Guthrie, Bob Marley, The Velvet Underground, Vashti Bunyan, Gillian Welch and more. Elizabeth and her family band (husband Daniel Littleton and daughter Storey) will perform a concert at Symphony Space in NYC on Saturday, December 17 and will be joined by some very special musical guests. Not only will it be a concert you don’t want to miss, but Symphony Space will also hold its Holiday Party for members that day, complete with cookie decorating after show. Symphony Space has a great line-up of shows in the next few months. A New Year’s Eve party concert by Tim and the Space Cadets, A Stam-Pede show of blazing-fast percussive footwork from celebrated dancers and Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem, a string-band performing a deep repertoire of traditional tunes that spans 200 years of American music. We LOVE three little birds. We love to do Yoga to that song. I also love you are my sunshine. It gets me all teary. I think my girls would be over the moon to go this event!
