WINNER: Congratulations to rmccoy1234!

We’re big fans of books with CDs at my house. We love reading the books, of course, but incorporating songs or an audio-version of the book is an enjoyable addition. And when there are songs that add to the story, all the better! There are few stories that combine these elements with as much creativity as A Duck in New York Cityby author and folk singer Connie Kaldor.

The actual story is classic and simple:  A Little Duck with a Big Idea heads to New York City.  Along the way he receives encouragement from a kind truck driver named Big Betty, and he performs his “ducky dance” all the way to New York City and success on Broadway. Children will enjoy having the lyrics to twelve silly and easy to enjoy songs. My personal favorite is Belly Button – it’s perfect for all of us navel gazers. The illustrations, by Fil & Julie, are multi-media artwork that emphasize the lighthearted attitude of the story.  My daughter kept trying to touch the grass and buttons used in the illustrations.

The accompanying CD has the twelve songs sung by author and Canadian folk singer Connie Kaldor, and it also includes a PDF of the lyrics and sheet music for each song. Perfect for your budding musician. For those of you who are iPad-enabled, there is also an interactive App in English and French for the story.  The App will “read” the story or allow the child or caretaker to read it. It also has the songs for listening or singing along.

Thanks to the generosity of publisher The Secret Mountain, we have an enhanced copy of the story (CD included) to giveaway to one lucky reader.  To enter, simply let us know in the comments section what your “big idea” was when you were a child. 1. Create a simulation of the world to solve the world’s problems via simulation rather than experimenting in real-life.

  2. I wanted to help deaf people hear. My Aunt and Uncle are deaf. I found out when I was older that they were used to the silence and actually didn’t want to hear!
