There’s a new fitness studio in town. Self-described “fitness fanatic” Maria Kyriakakis and her husband, Pedro Goncalves, opened FUZE Fitness Studio in September, offering classes in Zumba, women’s self defense, and Eagle Claw Kung Fu.

We’re all familiar with the hot new workout craze Zumba by now, and women’s self defense needs no explanation. But what exactly is Eagle Claw Kung Fu? According to Wikipedia, it’s an ancient “style of Chinese martial arts known for its gripping techniques, system of joint locks, takedowns, and pressure point strikes.” (Yikes.)

At FUZE, Eagle Claw Kung Fu is taught by Master Goncalves who, according to the fitness studio’s website, is one of six Masters in the world to receive certification from Grand Master Leung Shum, the leading authority in the United States on Eagle Claw Kung Fu.

The fitness studio’s hour-long Zumba classes are on Mondays and Fridays Wednesdays at 7 p.m. (starting Feb. 4, a third class will begin on Saturdays). Eagle Claw and the women’s self defense classes, also taught by Master Goncalves, have no set schedule to date, but Kyriakakis says FUZE will arrange a class for anyone interested.

FUZE Fitness is located at The Annex on Forest Street, behind the Montclair Cooperative School. For more information, visit their website here.
