For those keeping track, a total of eight candidates thus far have picked up petition packets for the Montclair Township Council election, according to the Municipal Clerk’s office.  Three – Harvey Susswein, Timothy Barr, and Councilman-At-Large Roger Terry – have indicated their intention to run for Mayor.  As of this morning, the probable candidates are:

Timothy Barr

Councilman-At-Large Roger Terry*

1st Ward

William Hurlock

2nd Ward

Walter Springer

Councilman Cary Africk*

4th Ward

Councilwoman Renee Baskerville*

Councilor-At-Large

Harvey Susswein

Timothy Barr

Roger Terry*

Walter Springer

Councilor Cary Africk*

Deputy Mayor Kathryn Weller-Demming*

* denotes incumbents

Councilor Rich Murnick, who has been rumored to be interested in running for Mayor, confirmed that he had not yet thrown his hat in the ring but that he will likely make a decision by the end of the week.

It has also been reported that former Mayor Robert Jackson is assembling a slate with Chris Swenson, Karen Turner and Joe Kavesh, with Jackson possibly running for Mayor.

“There is nothing new to report,” said Jackson on Tuesday afternoon.  “I’m not trying to be coy, but for now I’m going to keep my mouth shut.”  Jackson said he would probably decide whether or not to run in the next week to ten days.

The elections will be held in May.

  1. I can’t believe Kathryn wants to subject Montclair to her for another four years. Maybe she hasn’t finished that blanket she’s been knitting on the dais since 2008?

Tim Barr running is a funny idea. Payback for not being reappointed to the BOE by Mister Mayor?

  2. Jackson, Turner and Swenson give me hope that some damage can be repaired and we can maybe move forward in a few years. KWD? Really? Hire a baby sitter, please.

  3. LOL, KWD, again??? How does a “stay-at-home daughter” like herself really know what the citizens of Montclair need? Maybe she should go out into the real world and see what it’s like living on their own and paying bills, then maybe she would get a grip on her politics!

  4. What slays me to no end is how hypocritical Kathryn (and to the same extent Nick) in in running again for town council. During Fried’s failed attempt to extend his term by moving elections to November, Kathryn was a major supporter and too collected signatures. When she was asked if the extension of her own term was the motivation behind her participation in the referendum attempt, she emphatically stated that her time on the council has been far from a pleasant experience so why would she want to extend the misery? Then she goes to collect a packet to continue her torture. If anyone watched the council meeting last night, her attempted explanation for why all volunteer committee meetings should be televised, made Sarah Palin look like Hilary Clinton during Sarah’s infamous interview with Katie Couric.

  5. I think any committee formed by action of the governing body (the council) should be absolutely public. Private committess can be private.

  6. Madam “if you can’t afford Montclair taxes then move” Lafarge being for affordable housing? What moronically “proud” product of the Montclair schools.
