More than 300 runners are expected come together on Sunday, October 7, for the inaugural Douglas Williams Memorial 5000 Meter Run. The race will begin and end at the Montclair Art Museum.
On October 9, 2011, a clear, warm autumn night, Douglas M. Williams, 49, of Montclair, was walking home after spending time out with friends. Within blocks of reaching his home, Doug was suddenly struck by a passing vehicle that sped away and left his body on the side of the road. Tragically, hours later when he was found, Doug was pronounced dead. To date, the driver has not come forward or been found.
Doug was committed to his hometown, his career, and health and fitness–with a particular passion for running. A member of the Essex Running Club, he had completed hundreds of organized runs throughout the country, including six full marathons in New York City, Boston, and Chicago. Since Doug had such joy for running, his friends felt it only appropriate to hold a Memorial Run in his honor. The race will raise money to help a resident of Essex County with dreams to attend the Business School at Montclair State University, where Doug graduated in 1985. The scholarship will be awarded to a local, graduating high school student who plans to attend Montclair State University next fall.
