Studio Montclair is featuring two new exhibits filled with works created exclusively by its member artists. Most of it’s nearly 300 members live in Montclair, says Yvette Lucas, the organization’s president, and a local photographer and print maker herself. “You never know who you’ll find in the show. You may see the work of your next door neighbor, who you didn’t even know was an artist!”
In “Text & Subtext” the selected works all contain text that is more than mere words. It has been integrated into the shape and texture of the mixed media art pieces, and used to impart a personal meaning or opinion.
The works in “Photo-Surrealism” allow viewers to be surprised by what they are looking at, almost unconsciously thinking: what’s wrong with this picture? Is there a plausible visual surprise here?
Both exhibits are showing at the SMI Virginia S. Block Gallery, located at 33 Plymouth Street in Montclair (across from the Salvation Army building). There’s no entrance fee, and Lucas invites residents to visit anytime Monday through Friday, 7am-7pm. The exhibits close on December 20th.
Studio Montclair Inc. is a nonprofit organization of exhibiting professional artists and others interested in the visual arts. Its mission is to promote culture and education in the visual arts and encourage emerging artists.
