stranger alertUpdate: A tipster emailed us the following message: “Approximately 4:45 pm, a school bus turning south onto Forest Street from Walnut, hit a car parked on the west side of Forest.”

Gisella Aultman at transportation said that the school bus got stuck in the snow, but she has no report of it hitting any cars. She said they had an emergency vehicle to pick up the children and get them home.

Two school bus accidents occurred this morning due to road conditions.

Bus No. 605 (Black Rabbit) on its way to Hillside School and Black Fish on its way to Nishuane School both had accidents, with thankfully no injuries. Below are the messages sent to parents from the schools’ principals:

From Hillside School:

Dear Hillside Parent/Caregiver,

I am writing to inform you of a bus incident that occurred this morning. While our students were on their way to school, Bus No. 605 (Black Rabbit) slid into a parked car on Overlook Road because of the road conditions.

Fortunately and most importantly, all students were safe and no injuries were reported. The bus company immediately reported the accident to the Montclair Police who arrived on the scene and made sure everyone was safe and then cleared the bus to continue to Hillside.

As a precaution, upon arrival to school, our nurse checked each of the students and a phone call was made to all parents of the 18 students on the bus before they were cleared to go to class.

In addition, a backup bus was sent to pick up the remaining students on the route.

The safety of our students is of utmost priority, and we thank you for entrusting your children to our care. Please contact Transportation at (973) 509-4062 should you have questions.

Sincerely,
Michael J. Chiles, Sr.
Principal

From Nishuane School:

Dear Nishuane families,

I am writing to inform you of a bus incident that occurred this morning. While our students were on their way to school, the Black Fish bus got stuck and slid into a parked car on Edgemont Rd.

Fortunately and most importantly, all students were safe and no injuries were reported. The bus company immediately reported the accident to the Montclair Police, they arrived on the scene and made sure everyone was safe while the children waited on the bus for a back-up bus to arrive. The back-up bus transported the students to school and they arrived at 10:07am.

As a precaution, upon arrival to school, our nurse checked each of the students before they were cleared to go to class.

The safety of our students is of utmost priority, and we thank you for entrusting your children to our care. Please contact me should you have questions.

Sincerely,
Jill McLaughlin

  1. Thursday morning my daughter’s bus never came — no notification from the school district. That afternoon her bus did not show up to take them home from school, and all of the kids were carpooled to their bus stops by someone, though I have no idea who drove her. Once again, no notification from the district.

  2. @spicoli On Thursday our bus came RIGHT ON TIME (it’s usually about ten minutes after the official time) which almost caused our bus stop-mates to miss it. It’s possible that happened on Thursday AM. Don’t know about the afternoon…
