It looks like this weekend is going to be another cold one, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying some of the wonderful family-friendly events happening in our area.
Monster Jam is coming to the Izod Center in East Rutherford on Friday, January 30th (7:30 PM), and Saturday January 31st (2:00 PM and 7:30 PM). This event will feature eight monster trucks performing stunts and maneuvers that will captivate the audience with non-stop excitement. There will also be a Pit Party on the floor of the arena before the show (separate ticketing required). Kids tickets are actually $10 all weekend long! Parking fees apply. Liberty Science Center in Jersey City is always a big hit with kids with four floors of fun and hands-on learning. Sesame Street Presents: The Body Exhibit is a fairly new addition which highlights three zones: Your Outsides, Your Insides and Staying Healthy. With 17 different activities, there are plenty of opportunities to learn. Geared toward children ages 2-8, this exhibit will run through May 3, 2015, and is included in the cost of admission.
Maple syrup is often associated with our northernmost states, but families can experience a maple sugaring demonstration in nearby Chatham! Beginning at 2:00 PM every Saturday and Sunday until March 8th, discover the process including identifying and tapping trees, collecting sap and watching syrup made in an evaporator. Participants can also taste test three varieties of syrup. This activity is recommended for children ages 3 and up and admission is $3 per person. Imagine That!!! in Florham Park will host a Princess Breakfast on Saturday at 10:00 AM. Bagels, juice and coffee will be served while guests meet with their favorite princess characters. Children are encouraged to dress up in their fanciest ball gowns and wear their tiaras. Parents should have their cameras ready for the many photo opportunities available! Advance tickets may be purchased here to guarantee seating and special pricing. Admission is $15.99 per child and $13.99 per adult in advance.
On Sunday from noon to 4:00 PM, Fosterfields Living Historical Farm in Morris Township will host A Winter’s Day on the Farm. This event features a day in the life of a 1920’s farmer including a tractor-pulled wagon ride, maple tapping, wood-sawing and, weather permitting, harvesting ice on the pond. The Jersey cows and other farm animals will be there as well. This event is suitable for all ages and tickets range from $4 – $8. Children under age 2 are free.
Sunday is Hedgehog Day at the Bergen County Zoo in Paramus. Many families are considering getting a hedgehog as a pet and this event at the zoo’s Education Center will tell you all you need to know before adopting one. The event will include stories, crafts and a live animal demonstration. Admission is $8 per adult and $5 per child. More information can be found by visiting the Zoo’s website here.
Van Vleck House & Gardens’ Sunday series of music programs continues this week with The Mythmakers, a storytelling and music creation by Gerald Fierst and Richard Stillman. The program is suitable for children ages 6 and up and their adult companions. Admission is free but reservations are required.
