On Saturday, October 17, Montclair Public Library will host its First Annual Food for Thought Day, a daylong set of programs to help the community learn about nutrition and living healthier lifestyles.
“October is packed with national observances celebrating food, but it is important to remember healthy nutrition and moderation—especially as our community heads into the winter holidays,” said Chelsea Dodd, Information Services Supervisor at the library.
Below is the schedule of sessions:
- 10 am Eating Well with Diabetes to Live Your Best Life Presented by Marilyn Guzio, Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator (RD, CDE).
- 11:30 am What’s in a Name: Navigating the Minefield of Food Labeling. So McDonald’s is only going to use eggs from cage-free hens. What does that mean? Your favorite candy is fat-free? What does that mean? Two bags of chips seem identical but one says it’s all natural. What does that mean? Should I buy organic, local, Jersey fresh? Confused? Come to this consumer friendly guide to understanding labels and find out how to read a label so it tells you the truth. Presented by Melina Macall, food activist.
- 1 pm Healthy Eating On-The-Go. Eating on the run and trying to be healthy with a demanding schedule is a common problem. And many of those bad choices, one after another, not only add unwanted fat but also can cause hypertension, high blood pressure and inflammation throughout your body. Please join us for this insightful talk on some key strategies, tips and prep techniques to help you make smarter choices on the run. Presented by Tina Hong, Board Certified Health Coach and Founder of Goodness Multiplied Living Well Programs.
- 2:30 pm Searching for Health: Reliable Online Research. Letting your favorite blogger diagnose you? Find yourself relying on Siri to answer your nutrition questions? Access to the World Wide Web can be a great health tool, but only if used wisely. Come discover healthy methods for online research. Presented by Chelsea Dodd, MPL Information Services Supervisor.
Plus, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) representatives will be on hand from 10 am to 1 pm to answer questions.
