Welcome to the weekend! We’ve gathered up some fun activities to help you plan.
Watchung Booksellers (54 Fairfield Street, Montclair) will host Saturday AM Storytime on Saturday beginning at 10:30 AM. This week’s author is Paulette Bogan, who will present her book, Virgil and Owen Stick Together. Best friends, Virgil and Owen, love to play together at home and at school, but they have very different personalities. Usually it’s just fine, but this time things get a little difficult. This story looks at how even when friends disagree, they can still have lots of fun.
The Newark Museum (49 Washington Street, Newark) will host Creative Play sessions on Saturday at 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM, and 3:00 PM. Activities are suitable for children up to age 12, accompanied by their family. Each session includes a gallery investigation, an opportunity to handle objects from the touch collection, and a family-designed project to take home. In this week’s event, make your own carved red box.
Also on Saturday, Aaron Nigel Smith will perform at Symphony Space (2537 Broadway, NYC) at 11:00 AM. Known from the PBS KIDS Emmy Award-winning show “Between the Lions,” Aaron’s high-energy shows entertain kids with reggae, world music and rock and roll. He will be joined by members of his One World Chorus, students from the Achievement First School in East New York. Tickets are $20 for adults and $13 for kids.
Tap That Tree! at Reeves-Reed Arboretum (165 Hobart Avenue, Summit) kicks off the maple sugaring season. Families will learn the hows and whys behind tapping trees, as well as get first-hand experience actually helping to do it. The program runs from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM. Registration is required. Cost is $20 per family.
NJPAC (1 Center Street, Newark) will present The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe on Saturday at 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM, and again on Sunday at 2:00 PM. This dance adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ classic novel is choreographed by Randy James and features members of 10 Hairy Legs dance company and special guests. Presented in one act, this performance is suitable for children ages 5 and older. Tickets start at $29.
On Sunday, visit the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey (68 Elm Street, Summit) for the opening reception of Guide Ropes & Live Wires: Works by the Art Center Faculty from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. This special exhibition will highlight the Art Center’s faculty, all noteworthy professional artists. It will showcase a wide range of visual practices and features work by 35 artists. Students of art will surely be inspired.
Also on Sunday, Mayo Performing Arts Center (100 South Street, Morristown) will present Mega Bubble Show at 1:30 PM and 4:30 PM. This bubble spectacular will dazzle children and adults alike with an amazing array of bubbles in all shape and sizes, as well as laser and lighting effects. Tickets start at $20.
