Blk Grrrl Book Fair will present a two hour Read-Aloud of Elie Wiesel’s Night in conjunction with Human Right’s Day at the First Congregational Church in Montclair on Saturday, December 10.
Teka-Lark Lo, a Bloomfield resident, is the founder of Blk Grrl Book Fair. “We’re organizing this in conjunction with the Montclair Human Rights Day, because literature is a map. It is a map of history. It is a map of what to do when you’re happy and when you’re sad. It shows you how to rise above difficult challenges. Literature teaches us empathy and and teaches us about the entire human community,” explains Lo, who adds, “The book Night is a story that tells what happens when a system decides some people deserve no empathy and some people aren’t people. Night is a reminder of what kind of havoc not seeing other people, whether it be figuratively or literally, can do.”
Human Rights Day is observed every year on December 10. It commemorates the day on which, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In remembrance of that day, Montclair will participate in the day of celebration and activism. There will be special guest readers from the art, literary and social justice communities who will begin the reading.
