Happy weekend! There’s plenty to do around town and beyond. We’ve rounded up some fun and family-friendly things to do in the area. Check ‘em out!
After a sold out run in December, Summit Playhouse (10 New England Avenue, Summit) will present three additional performances of Oliver Jr. on Friday evening at 7:30 PM, Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM, and Sunday evening at 7:30 PM. Recommended for children ages 5 and up, this classic musical is based on Charles Dickens’ novel, Oliver Twist. Running time is approximately 70 minutes. Tickets are $20 per person plus $1.69 service fee.
Maple Sugaring Demonstrations begin this weekend at the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center (247 Southern Blvd., Chatham Township). Learn about the process of maple sugaring, identify and tap maple trees, collect sap, and make syrup over a wood-fired evaporator. Demonstrations are one hour in length and begin at 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM on Saturday and Sunday. Cost is $3 per person age 3 and up. No registration is required but seating is first come, first served.
On Saturday, NJPAC will present a free program to celebrate the life and work of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Enjoy an afternoon of dance, music, visual arts, and spoken word activities. All ages are welcome. Programs begin at 11:00 AM.
Also on Saturday, Just Kidding at Symphony Space (2537 Broadway, NYC) will host Michael and the Rockness Monsters at 11:00 AM. Musician Michael Napolitano will present his award-winning rock concert experience, filled with silliness and a rock and roll backbeat. This all ages show has a run time of 60 minutes. Tickets are $17 ($14 for members).
The Creativity Caravan will be hosting a Grand Opening Open House this Sunday from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM in their new location (28 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair). Stop by for a few minutes to learn more and celebrate their new home. Waffle It & Co will be serving tiny waffles as well.
On Sunday (and most Sundays through March 12), enjoy an afternoon of guided snowshoeing on the trails of Pyramid Mountain NHA (473 Boonton Avenue, Montville Twp). Use your own showshoes or rent a pair. No experience is necessary. This event is free and for children ages 10 and up with their adult companions.
Also on Sunday, stop by Montclair Art Museum for Drop-In Studio between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. The new Helen & Bill Geyer Art Studio will be stocked with a range of art materials to explore with a seasoned MAM studio instructor. This is free for members and included in Museum admission for non-members.
Pinkalicious the Musical is back at Mayo Performing Arts Center (100 South Street, Morristown) on Sunday at 1:30 PM and 4:30 PM. The show is based on the popular children’s book Pinkalicious and is about a girl who finds herself in a colorful predicament after eating too many pink cupcakes and getting a severe case of Pinkititis! This show is for children ages 4-12. Tickets are $12-$15.
