Asha Ganpat, a Trinidadian-born, multicultural artist/sculptor, is creating a solo exhibit,“Booty,” with site-specific works “to both allure and bait,” according to a release from 73 See Gallery. The exhibition, which opens on Saturday, Sept. 23, will directly engage the viewer in multi-sensory experiences.
There will be an opening reception on Sept. 23 at 5 p.m.
The exhibit includes a series titled “Liquids,”30 framed compositions of graphite and gold leaf on paper. It and other works have been created in direct response to the exploration of the concept of “booty” as a robbery: “What can we learn from satiated desire, slaked from being taken, stolen, wrested, claimed, or mugged?: the artist writes.
Ganpat received her B.F.A. from Mason Gross, Rutgers University, and M.F.A. from Montclair State University. She is an adjunct professor at MSU.
She has shown at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Instituto di Cultura, Exit Art, The Noyes Museum, Seton Hall University, The Jersey City Museum and the Nathan Cummings Foundation.
