New Jersey’s Senator Cory Booker, who got his start as mayor of Newark, has announced he will run for president. The announcement Friday comes on the first day of Black History Month.

“The history of our nation is defined by collective action; by interwoven destinies of slaves and abolitionists; of those born here and those who chose America as home; of those who took up arms to defend our country, and those who linked arms to challenge and change it,” says Booker, in a video announcement filmed in Newark.

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr., said Friday in a statement:

“Over a year ago, I predicted Cory Booker would be our next president and I am overjoyed that he announced his candidacy today. I have worked with Cory on the local and national levels and, no matter what the issue, his concern has always been about doing what is best for the public. His unique way of bringing people together, courage to work across party lines and passion to challenge what is wrong are the traits American needs in its next leader. Without a doubt, I strongly support Cory Booker for President in 2020.”
