A couple of years ago, composer/music educator Doug Hall and Iris Schaffer-Hall decided that it was time to move on from their Montclair home, but the decision didn’t come easily. As with many homeowners, the house had been the host for many joys — and some pains — for their blended family. It was where children grew and later returned to for holidays. It was a place of comfort in all seasons, and sometimes also a money pit. Sound familiar?
As part of his home-selling therapy, Doug Hall wrote a song to perform with Iris at the couple’s final block party as owners of their house, bringing the entire gathering of neighbors to tears. With lines like, “The kids are grown and gone and we are moving on,” we think many locals, current and former, will find “Downsizing” relatable.
Guest musicians like Pinegrove’s Evan Stephens Hall and Zack Levine, as well as long-time friend and musician Michael William Levine, ensure the song is truly a local and family affair. Have some tissues ready… and enjoy!
