Lyle Harmon, Coco Luraschi, Maya Herrera-Shimokawa and Lindsay Chabla will be playing alongside students from Nairobi, Kenya. Lyle and Coco attend Edgemont School; Maya and Lindsay attend Belleville Elementary School #5. They were all winners of last year’s Elementary School Recorder contest sponsored by Montclair Early Music.
Lyle, Coco, Maya, and Lindsay are four of the ten students throughout the United States who have been selected to participate in the Engaging Communities: Recorders Beyond Borders program. This virtual celebration will take place on June 12 at 9 am EDT. The public can sign up for this free event at eventbrite.com/e/engaging-communities-recorders-beyond-borders-tickets-154474490359.
“I’m delighted that our young musicians are able to participate in this international event. What a wonderful experience for them,” founder and president of Montclair Early Music Julienne Pape said.
Following the performance, the children will have an opportunity to greet each other and share stories, ending with a question and answer session for all viewers.
There are still a few openings for this year’s Elementary School Recorder Challenge. For more information, contact info@montclairearlymusic.org. The fee for the six-week program is $49, which is waived for low income families. The program is partially funded by Investors Savings Bank and the American Recorder Society.
