In the 15 years since it began with Dr. James Morgan examining patients and giving out medications from his backpack in the poorest neighborhood in Port au Prince, Haiti, Lamp for Haiti has grown into a recognized provider of community based health care and employment opportunities in this devastated area.
Operating on a $400,000 budget with more than 20 Haitian medical and clerical employees, this committed staff has weathered hurricanes, earthquakes, civil unrest, and political turmoil to provide life-saving medical care to more than 15,000 patients a year.
As Lamp founder Dr. Morgan wrote recently, “A positive word-of-mouth reputation does not come easy, but it is a testament to an idea. It’s an idea that rejects the status quo, “whatever” in favor of “what if? “. What if we build a health center in the poorest and most notorious shantytown in the country? Fifteen years later, Cité Soleil residents are happy with the answer.”
Lamp for Haiti will celebrate its Fifteenth Anniversary and remarkable progress at its annual Gala at the Upper Montclair Women’s Club, Friday, November 12.
