MONTCLAIR, NJ — Watchung Booksellers, in partnership with The Forward, welcomes Nomi M. Stolzenberg and David N. Myers, authors of “American Shtetl: The Making of Kiryas Joel, A Hasidic Village in Upstate New York” as part of its ongoing “Evening with the Authors” virtual events. They’ll be in conversation with Jodi Rudoren, Editor-in-Chief of The Forward on Wednesday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m.

“American Shtetl” is a compelling account of how a small contingent of pious, Yiddish-speaking Jews settled in upstate New York and grew it into a thriving insular enclave and a powerful local government. While rejecting the norms of mainstream American society, Kiryas Joel has been stunningly successful in creating a world apart by using the very instruments of secular political and legal power that it disavows.
