Late Show host and Montclair resident Stephen Colbert explained what happened at the U.S. Capitol, when a Late Show team joined by Triumph the Insult Comic Dog were arrested last week and charged with unlawful entry. During a monologue on Monday night’s show, Colbert joked that it was an instance of “puppetry in the first degree” and not an insurrection, referencing comments made by Tucker Carlson.
The crew, according to Colbert, had been shooting footage at offices across the street from the Capitol building for two days and were invited into the offices of the Congress people they were interviewing.
Colbert said it was at the end of their second day on Thursday when “Triumph and my folks were approached and detained by the Capitol Police. Which actually, isn’t that surprising. The Capitol Police are much more cautious than they were, say, 18 months ago, and for a very good reason. If you don’t know what that reason is, I know what news network you watch.”
The seven people were later charged with unlawful entry, and an investigation is now underway in consultation with Matthew M. Graves, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, the Capitol Police said, adding that more criminal charges may be filed, the New York Times reported Friday.

Sorry, but Colbert is an embarrassment and certainly does nothing to bridge the divide in this country. In fact, quite the opposite. Is he any different than Tucker Carlson? They both play the same game but on different teams and get rich doing it. The less attention paid to both of them the better…..
Who is Tucker Carlson?
The difference between Colbert and Carlson is that the former knows an attempted coup and overthrow of democracy when he sees it while the latter referred to the J6 Capitol attack as a “forgettably minor incident.” Did I forget to mention that one is a racist and bigot while the other is not? Those who are blind to the difference between these two because they both “fail to bridge the divide in this country” don’t know the difference between non racist and racist discourse and its implications.
Racism? First of all, what. Second of all, huh? Third…
I think we can all settle on common ground – this was 1st Degree Puppetry.
Frank, Pretty much everything that is going on these days is a clown show to keep us angry and/or amused. Inflation still rising, interest rates on the way up, gas and energy sky high, and the little guy is bearing the brunt. What the world needs now is less Colbert and Carlson and more Johnny Depp!!!
Those who point to rising inflation and interest rates as well as gas and energy prices ignore the greater and vastly imminent problem of the potential demise of democracy and erosion of the rule of law. It is another way of conveniently and disingenuously absolving the twice impeached former president and his corrupt GOP coterie for sins against the Republic, including the former Mayor of NYC who’s behind the wheel said clown car.
I am not a Trump fan but my two eyes and ears tell me that the FBI was clearly lied to. Then members of the FBI, knowing they were lied to, were complicit in a scheme to create an impeachment. When that is OK in the minds of haters then I agree. Democracy is very threatened. When people think a bunch of unarmed knuckleheads out of a population 330 million could overthrow the government then it time for me to start selling bridges. There is a nice one across the East River into Brooklyn. Anyone interested??
