Name: Wendy Fox-Warfield
Where do you live? We moved from 14 years in Montclair to West Orange
When did you move there? About four years ago; we are in a great neighborhood!
Where did you grow up? My husband and I both grew up in Baltimore, Md. We met at a Ramones concert in 1986 at a rock club, Hammerjacks.
How do you make a living? OR What is your everyday passion?
I own a hair salon, Parlor Hair Studio, going on 19 years now! Just this year, after 38 years being behind the chair, cutting and coloring, I shifted to focusing on management. After two rotator cuff repair surgeries, I felt forced to make this difficult decision. To not be involved in the creative work of my profession has been a huge adjustment for me, but all is good and I am so grateful to have an amazing team that I know will take care of everything when I am not in the salon.
My passion has always been art, which is why we also exhibit local art in the salon. Luckily, having more time to paint, which has been something I have loved since I was a child, makes me happy and fills that creative need. I have actually been busy for over a year working on an exhibit which will be at Parlor with an opening reception on August 28th and will run through October.
Coffee, tea or … ? Coffee in the morning – no dog walks until after at least one cup! I also truly enjoy a glass of sparkling rosé in the evening on our deck, which faces west, watching the sun set!
What’s your idea of a perfect weekend day? Hiking with my dogs and husband or some friends, day trips to Asbury, NYC, or New Hope, kayaking on Lake Waywayanda.
What’s your favorite local restaurant? I have a few: Turtle and the Wolf, Faubourg, Bivio, and Ruthie’s
What’s on your nightstand? I have been embarrassingly in guilty pleasure mode since 2020. I am currently enjoying (please don’t judge me!) Certain Girls by Jennifer Weiner.
What are you listening to? I have been on a bit of a nostalgic mood so at home: Amy Mann, Steely Dan, Joe Jackson, Belle and Sebastian. For newish music, I am loving Alex G, Big Thief, Beach House – so may good indie bands out there!!
What are your current indulgences? Having fun coming up with summery grilled meat and veggie street taco ideas, binging “Someone Feed Phil” and “Blown Away” on Netflix and ‘Trying’ and ‘Loot’ on Apple TV.
What talent you would most like to have? To sing and play guitar! I am such a frustrated musician!
What’s the worst-kept (or best-kept!) secret about Montclair? The worst kept is how awesome Montclair is! So crowded now that everyone knows!
What do you hope they say about you at your funeral? That I am the most awesome person they had ever known! LOL, just kidding! That I helped them feel good about themselves and lifted their spirits when they walked out of the salon! That is what I miss the most!
