(COURTESY MONTCLAIR PUBLIC SCHOOLS)
Some 26 Montclair High School seniors have received the New Jersey Seal of Biliteracy, with honors awarded for proficiency across five languages — French, Italian, Polish, German and Spanish.
The Seal of Biliteracy is an official recognition from the state Department of Education. The credential “attests to each recipient’s unwavering dedication to proficiency and global citizenship” and “affirms that these seniors are prepared to utilize the language that they have acquired as they commence their post-secondary pursuits,” a district release says.
“On behalf of the Montclair Public Schools District, we want to congratulate all the 26 NJ Seal of Biliteracy award recipients,” Vicky Chang, district supervisor of World Languages & ESL, said during a ceremony celebrating the students.
This was the district’s fourth year participating in the program.
Of the 26 seals awarded, 15 were earned in Spanish, seven in French, two in German, one in Italian and one in Polish. Two of this year’s recipients are former English Language Learner students.
The winners will receive an official certificate from the state, as well as a medallion to wear at graduation. They were honored at the April 19 Board of Education meeting.
