Cameron Animal Hospital shared the sad news Friday of the passing of legendary Montclair veterinarian Dr. George Cameron:

An incredible friend and mentor, Dr. Cameron was a hero to many in the community, and dedicated his life to helping the animals he loved so much.

Dr. Cameron was a brilliant veterinarian and practiced for more than 45 years at the hospital that his father founded, Cameron Animal Hospital. He won many professional accolades in his career, but his greatest pride was his role as a mentor to students and new veterinarians; he guided more than 150 students through college and into veterinary school. His other professional joy was his work with stray and abandoned animals. Over the course of his career he took in thousands of animals, nursing them back to health and eventually finding them homes, through what has become Cameron Animal Rescue. He was never happier than when he had a tiny kitten to cuddle.

Above all, he adored his family, including his wife, daughter, grandchildren, siblings, and nephews and nieces.

There will never be another Dr. Cameron, but we will do our best to carry on his legacy.

Dr. Cameron retired from Cameron Animal Hospital in October 2019 after serving Montclair area pets for a half century.

From his obituary:

Dr. Cameron was born January 9, 1936. Growing up in Parsippany with his siblings and parents and was surrounded by animals of all kinds who he helped care for. As a young boy, he often went with his father to nearby farms to help treat and care for sick animals. George found his passion, caring for all animals just as his father did. Dr. Cameron took over the family practice, Cameron Animal Hospital in Montclair, N.J. and was a practicing veterinarian for nearly 50 years. He retired a few years ago, serving as a mentor to so many students over the years. Dr. Cameron was an amazing and compassionate veterinarian who touched so many lives throughout his life. He will be greatly missed by all and was an inspiration to his family and friends and will be remembered for his devotion to saving and rescuing animals in need.

  1. What a kind and gentle man he was! As a child and into adulthood, I remember sitting in the wooden booth with my beloved pet and Dr Cameron would work his magic and I would walk into Bloomfield Ave with such love in my heart. There were many times I left without my pet and Dr Cameron and his wife Juanita’s words and hugs comforted me as my tears fell from my cheeks.
I can imagine, as Dr Cameron entered the Gates of Heaven, he was greeted by all his little patients exclaiming “we have been waiting for you”.
Rest in heaven Dr Cameron. Job here on earth…well done.
