James “Jimmy” Irving Hinton Sr. of Montclair, a retired member of the Montclair Fire Department, died peacefully on Sept. 3, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was 77.

Born in 1946 in Suffolk, Virginia, Mr. Hinton was the son of James and Mildred Hinton. 

He married Frances Taylor in 1969, and the couple had five children. Mr. Hinton retired from the Montclair Fire Department in 2004.

He touched the lives of many through his storytelling and by making people laugh. His favorite pastimes were fishing and listening to jazz music. 

Sharing his belief about God’s kingdom within the community was his greatest passion. He served as an elder in the Montclair North Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Mr. Hinton is survived by his wife of 53 years, Frances; his daughter, Jerry Jones; his sons, Rodney, Travis, Guy (Patty), Jireh (Melissa) and James Jr.; five grandchildren, Sterling, Jerelle (Sarah), Jayden, Genesis and Serenity; siblings, Calvin, Wayne (Brenda), Sharon, Karen (Robert Coles), Jennifer (Robert Foley) and Gwendolyn, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial ceremony will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 330 Orange Road, Montclair.
