Reports of stolen mail have steadily increased in the past several weeks, Montclair police say.

Checks placed in Montclair post office mailboxes are being stolen and cashed, Sgt. Terence Turner said. The incidents are not confined to any one United States Postal Service location in Montclair, Turner said.

“It is a very active investigation between the Montclair Police Department and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service,” Turner said.

Incidents of stolen mail should be reported to a hotline set up with the Postal Inspectors Office, at 877-876-2455.
