In brief: Montclair to increase crossing guards

The Montclair Police Department is seeking school crossing guards to work two to four hours per day, according to assignments.

The number of school crossing guards will increase by 10 to 60 total.

Crossing guards regulate and direct the movement of school children at street intersections, paying particular attention to their safety; assist and protect children at street intersections; observe and report unsafe traffic conditions at assigned street intersection and may make recommendations to improve these conditions. They also notify the proper authorities in cases requiring police action or medical attention; keep and prepare reports as needed; respond to complaints and inquiries from the public.

Applicants must have a valid New Jersey driver's license, and must be able to work in various kinds of weather. Successful candidates will be required to successfully complete a background check and a medical examination including a drug screening.
