Every day thousands of people across the world embark on dangerous journeys seeking safety for themselves and their children. In 2022, their number totaled more than 32 million. To honor their strength of purpose and courage, we celebrate World Refugee Day each June 20.
Since 2005, Shine Global has told many of these stories. A non-profit media company founded by Montclair residents, Albie Hecht and Susan MacLaury, Shine Global has produced 18 films bringing stories of children’s resilience to the world’s attention, creating educational materials to enhance the films and screening several of them for Congress. The two current films, Home is Somewhere Else, and From This Small Place, tell their stories in two very different locales: Mexico and Bangladesh.
On June 20th Susan, Albie, and Shine Global advisor, Betty Murphy, will be joined by Taimi Arvidson, the Director of From This Small Place to show trailers of the two films and introduce the stories of two unique groups seeking safety. Please come join this conversation about the role of the arts in effecting social change, and how together, we can champion the rights of refugees.
