Mona Brody – Portals, Apparitions, and Other Voices

Mona Brody, an accomplished and renowned artist has shown her work both nationally and internationally. Brody says of her work, “Through the process of working, reworking, layering, and subtracting, I attempt to locate a specific but unnamable place with its own rules that surprises me.” The artist’s work explores the relationship between nature, the human condition, and uncertainty. Her paintings are often mysterious and unsettling, but they are not meant to be straightforward declarations of abstract art. Instead, they are a fusion of different emotions, filled with empathy and imagination. The artist uses alternative painting tools and materials, including handmade oil paints, pigmented shellac, and enamel, to challenge the traditional approach to painting.

This exhibition will be held in combination with the work of Anne Trauben: Step Up on a Stool to Reach the Sky which will be in the downstairs gallery at the Center.

Anne Trauben is a multidisciplinary artist, born in Brooklyn, NY. Her artistic practice consists of drawing, collage, sculpture, and installation. She received a BA in Studio Art with a concentration in Ceramics from Arizona State University in Tempe Arizona, and an MFA in Ceramics from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

This installation, “Step Up on a Stool to Reach the Sky,” started in 2019 and is composed of clay, electrical fixtures, wood, paper collage, crystal gems, and wire. Ms. Trauben says of the installation, “Sit down and, if it suits you, enjoy being under the night sky. Doing so helps to complete the work. The title of this work is a suggestion, or really, an invitation. Like folklore, a poem, and a leap of faith, the night sky holds so much possibility.”
