June 29, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
FreeTheater Resources Unlimited (TRU), and Cate Cammarata present the final reading in the 2015 TRU Voices Series: searchers.net, a computer dating extravaganza by T. Cat Ford, on Monday, June 29, 2015 at 7pm at the SoHo Playhouse, 15 Vandam Street, NYC. searchers.net features Brad Bellamy, Laurence Cantor, Mark Finley, Melissa Hurst, Les J. N. Mau, and Patricia Randell.
Baby boomers Maggie, Cheryl and Lou, are lonely. They begin a search for that last great love via the Internet. We meet their dates. We share their dreams. In a world where looking for that special someone has all the grace of flipping through a catalogue – is true love still possible?
searchers.net is directed by Melissa Maxwell, whose recent credits include Safe House at Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, and the world premiere of Slashes of Light at The Kitchen Theatre and Trouble in Mind at Ohio State University this past season. Producer Cate Cammarata has two new musicals currently in development: My Life Is A Musical, seen last summer at the Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor, NY; and No Chance in Hell, which was voted Best in the Toronto Fringe and had a reading in NYC earlier this month.
The evening marks the final play of The 2015 TRU Voices Play Reading Series, the 17th annual series of new plays by TRU writers produced by TRU producers. “This year’s series is notable for several reasons,” observes TRU president Bob Ost. “All three plays have members of our Producer Development Program involved, which happened only by chance since the selection committee had no idea about this when discussing the selections. Yet incredibly, Echoes of Octavia was produced by Pat Blake, one of our program directors. He also worked with program member Molly Morris in producing The Hummingbirds; and program member Cate Cammarata is producing searchers.net, which is written by member T. Cat Ford. Unexpectedly, it’s the TRU Producer Program series!”
The purpose of the series is to help develop new plays and help producers develop the skills needed to produce new works, and foster the producer-writer relationship for future development beyond our series. Each reading will be followed by a “Dollars and Sense” panel discussion with prominent New York producers and general managers focusing on potential venues, marketing and budgeting of the works presented. Attendees of searchers.net will be given an insider’s look at the producing process and the development track for a new play from commercial producers Pat Addiss (Gigi, A Christmas Story, Dinner with the Boys, Buyer and Cellar, Promises Promises, Little Women); Michael Alden (Disgraced, Becoming Dr. Ruth, Grey Gardens, The King’s Speech on stage, Bat Boy); David Elliott, co-director of Perry Street Theatricals (Dames at Sea, My Life Is a Musical, Bedlam Theatre’s St. Joan/Hamlet, Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike, In the Continuum, An Oak Tree); and Jeremy Handelman (On the Town, White’s Lies, F#@king Up Everything).
Admission is free, but Reservations are required. Please RSVP at least one day in advance (or much sooner) by calling (212)-714-7628, or e-mailing TRUStaff1@gmail.com.
