The 2020 Girl Scout Cookies got a fresh new look when the packaging was overhauled and two Montclair girls are featured on this year’s Girl Scout cookie packages sold nationwide, according to Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey (GSHNJ).

Samiyah A. and Christel B. are both Girl Scouts from Montclair chosen from thousands of applicants to grace the packages.

Samiyah appears on the new Lemon-UpsTM cookie package, while Christel is featured on the Thin Mints® box.

Samiyah, a junior in high school, said Girl Scouts has opened the door to so many opportunities.

“It feels unreal to be selected,” she said. “I really can’t believe it. I sent in my photos without much belief that they would select me. My acceptance makes me believe I am capable of achieving many things.”

Christel, a freshman at The College of New Jersey in Ewing who is studying nursing and is an ROTC Army cadet, was chosen for a different reason.

She was asked to help with the younger girls during the photoshoot, and ultimately became part of the shoot.

“I received an email asking for assistance on the set to watch the younger girls,” Christel said. “When they asked me to participate, I jumped at the opportunity. I can’t believe I’m on the box!”

Both girls, who have been involved in Girl Scouts for years, said the many programs and opportunities in Girl Scouting have taught them about community involvement, leadership, helping others, and the many doors that are open to girls.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program officially began on Tuesday, Jan. 15.

The Girl Scout Cookie program is a way for girls to earn money to support their dreams, and it's a hands-on leadership and financial literacy program. Girls gain essential skills, not from a book, but from real-life experiences building a strong foundation for success. The Girl Scout Cookie Program teaches Girl Scouts skills to grow into leaders in their own life, in business and in the world by teaching girls about goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics, according to Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey (GSHNJ).
