A high-speed chase involving Montclair Police officers, which ended with two dead following a crash in Glen Ridge, is under investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The preliminary investigation indicates that MPD officers attempted a motor vehicle stop of a 2008 Mercedes Monday night, Nov. 26, when the vehicle drove away at a high rate of speed. The officers then followed the vehicle with police lights activated, according to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II.
The prosecutor’s office was not able to provide information on where police first attempted to pull over the vehicle, where and how the chase ensued. According to the prosecutor’s office, the chase ended at about 10 p.m., in the area of High Street and Bloomfield Avenue in Glen Ridge, when the driver hit a light pole. The car then hit a tree and burst into flames, killing both the driver and a passenger.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Bureau investigate all police pursuits when there is a serious injury or death.
The driver of the car, Galo G. Flores, 25, of Harrison, and passenger, Carlos Nieves, 20, of Newark, were pronounced dead at the scene at 10:17 p.m.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
