Make it two in a row for the Mounties as Montclair got out to an early lead and never let up, beating West Morris Central, 17-13.
Led by attacker Olivia Rivera's four goals and some outstanding work in net by Olivia Lynch, the Mounties move to 2-1 on the season. MHS took an early lead, scoring twice in the opening moments, on shots by Natalie Rechan and Nora Giordano.
WMC responded though, and for the first portion of the half, kept pace with Montclair. Slowly but surely, though, the Mounties asserted themselves on both ends of the field, stifling the Wolfpack whenever they crossed midfield with the ball and clogging the shooting lanes in front of Lynch.
With multiple goals by Rivera, as well as Maria Daniskas and Nanette-Rose Walls-Tarver, the Montclair lead increased and by the end of the first half, the Mounties were up 10-6.
MHS was helped by some sloppy play on the part of the Wolfpack, as WMC continually tried to complete long passes across the field which were often knocked aside, if not picked off completely. WMC also tried to pass through Montclair players multiple times in the first half, disrupting their own offense.
The first half was a mess for the Wolfpack, while everything MHS did seemed to work smoothly.
West Morris wouldn't go away though, and came out hot in the second half, scoring two goals in rapid succession. Montclair seemed to be on its heels, and the Wolfplack gashed the defensive zone repeatedly.
Coach Ann Jennings got her crew settled down though, and while WMC closed to within three goals at one point, the Mounties got back in the groove, scoring multiple goals in a row to reestablish their dominance in the game.
MHS ground the clock down and finished the game on a pretty goal by Nora Giordano (her third of the game) off a great pass by Rivera.
Montclair now faces a tough test as Ridgewood comes to Woodman Field on Friday at 4:30pm.
