Two Montclair sports figures — Lenny Coleman and Steve Tober — will be honored at the 49th Annual Mercier Club Sportsman of the Year Award Dinner.

Coleman is this year’s recipient of the Peter A. Carlesimo Award. Coleman was a star athlete in both baseball and football— graduating from Montclair High School in 1967 and playing both sports at Princeton University, Mercier Club said in an announcement of the event.

Coleman has served as the commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and the commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Energy, and was the last president of National League Baseball.

Tober is this year’s recipient of the Rev. Msgr. Edward J. Larkin Award. Rober is a sportswriter and columnist who has written for the Montclair Times and Sideline Chatter.

The March 28 dinner will at Mayfair Farms in West Orange. There will be a cash bar starting at 6 p.m., with a steak dinner at 7 p.m.

Attendance is limited to men and boys 14 years and older. Full vaccination is required. Tickets are $90 per person, which includes a chance for a door prize. Tickets can be purchased online on the Eventbrite event page (search “Mercier Sportsman Beefsteak Dinner” at Eventrbite.com).

The awards dinner benefits local charities, according to the announcement.
