Montclair African-American Heritage Foundation to be honored with car caravan

The Montclair African-American Heritage Foundation will hold a car caravan on Saturday, June 5, instead of its annual parade.

The caravan, beginning at at Glenfield Park, will take place 10 a.m. and end at the South End Business District. This year’s grand marshals are Montclair residents Myrna Hinton and Margaret Stewart. The Ambassador is Father Charles Brady, who was a priest at St. Peter Claver Roman Catholic Church, founded in 1931 as an African American Mission in the township of Montclair.

After the caravan, at 11 a.m., a plaque will be unveiled at Orange Road and Cedar Avenue in honor of Celess Young, a longtime barber in Montclair who had a tremendous impact on residents, specifically Black men, and passed away in 2016, said Fourth Ward Councilman David Cummings.

Special guests will include: State Senator Nia Gill, Essex County Administrator and former Mayor Robert Jackson, former Fourth Ward Councilor Dr. Renee Baskerville and Reverend Dr. DeForest ‘Buster” Soaries.
