For Sosi Korian, every game of field hockey during her senior year is one to cherish, but one against crosstown rival Montclair Kimberley Academy is ever more special.

“Every time we match up with this team, it’s a fight because we’re both from Montclair, and we both want to have the title,” she said after the Mounties 2-1 win this past Monday. “I think this game was 100 percent about heart today. Both teams had good players, but I think we came out on top because we wanted it, we have the heart and we love each other. We’re a family and will do anything for each other.”

For head coach Mary Pat Mercuro, Korian’s game is all about heart and effort.

“She’s a team leader. She does it on the field,” Mercuro said. “I know she’s an offensive player, but she motivates everyone, all over the field. She’ll come back, she’ll call for the ball, she’ll pass the ball. She sees the field and she shares her knowledge while she’s playing. She’s just done so much for us.”

More than anything, Korian is trying to make the most of her last year at Montclair High School.

“With all the stairs and everything, it’s been interesting,” she said. “I’m just trying to make the most of it. Take every memory in that I can. This game wasn’t one I was going to let go by.”

She took a minute from soaking in her senior year and a win over MKA to let us get to know her a little better in this week’s athlete spotlight.

Have you decided on any colleges?

No, I’m still deciding, but I think I want to go to a state school. And I’ll hopefully keep playing field hockey, probably in club.

Do you know what you want to major in?

I really like psychology, actually. I think it’s really cool how the brain works in different ways and why people do certain things. I want to be able to study that and give back to people and help.

What do you do for fun?

I hang out with my friends, with my family. My best friends are the field hockey team, so I’m always with them and always doing stuff with them. We come as a team and go as a team so….that’s what I’m always doing.

How do you prepare for a game?

Music has been a big thing for me, throughout school. Before gametime on the bus, it really gets me pumped and in the zone for the game. Mostly pop, some rap. I like Drake a lot.

How far can this team go?

I think we are so capable of winning a sectional and states. If we play like we just played with all that heart and passion, we can win the whole thing.
