A 14-year-old boy riding a bike across Bellevue Avenue was struck by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon in Upper Montclair, police said Thursday.

A 41-year-old Verona man was driving east on Bellevue Avenue when he hit the teen, who was riding across that street near its intersection with Northview Avenue, according to Montclair Police Detective Lt. David O'Dowd. The accident happened around 3:30 p.m., O'Dowd said in an email.

The boy, a Montclair resident, suffered injuries to both his legs in the crash and was transported to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson for treatment, O'Dowd said.

The incident is under investigation.

The collision took place just a few hours before the Township Council heard a stream of residents express their fears about their safety when crossing some of the major roads in Montclair, such as Grove Street and Valley Road. The council is considering lowering the speed limit on Grove Street to 30 mph from 35 mph.

The original version of this story had the incorrect age for the bicyclist, based on inaccurate information provided by police.
