Deciding on only three slices of pizza in the entire town of Montclair is incredibly challenging.
There are many great options for pizza-by-the-slice in this town — so many that it took me a long time to anal
yze not only what locations to feature, but also what slices to eat.Eventually, I decided to focus on three different slice styles, rather than just comparing three plain slices.
1. The “plain” slice from Villa Victoria Pizzeria
The plain slice from Villa Victoria is traditional New York style pizza. Offering a truly gigantic slice of pizza, The ratio of cheese to sauce to crust is absolutely spot on, with a wonderful mixture of crispiness, cheesiness and sauciness..
2. The “classic” slice from Ruthie’s Bar-B-Q & Pizza
Ruthie’s Bar-B-Q & Pizza features the “classic” slice, made with fresh mozzarella, thinly sliced tomatoes, finished off with sliced basil and Asiago cheese. For a special treat, order a classic pie with fennel sausage; you can thank me later. This slice combines the lovely flavors of fresh tomatoes and fresh mozzarella, and with the addition of the basil, is a beautifully light slice of pizza.
3. The “chicken, bacon, & ranch” slice from Enzo Pizzeria
Enzo Pizzeria has many specialty slices that I considered sampling, including their buffalo chicken slice. But I felt obligated to feature the chicken, bacon and ranch slice, which has been a favorite of mine since I first had it many years ago. The white slice - meaning no tomato sauce - is covered in crispy bacon and breaded chicken, topped with ranch dressing and might not be for everybody, but I think it is a prime example of a specialty slice of pizza. All of the flavors and textures are accentuated by the generous addition of ranch dressing.
