The Montclair NAACP Youth Council and Education Committee and the Montclair school district hosted a literacy awareness event, "Children’s Kwanzaa Traditions," at Nishuane School on Dec. 16.

The event was held in partnership with Montclair Moms of Color, the Montclair Public Library, the Montclair PTA Council, the School Action Team for Partnership, Brother to Brother, Sister to Sister, See Do Be, Inc., Urban Kween and the Independent Contemporary Arts Project.

The event included an art center, a literacy station and mural making, a release said. Performances included an Anansi story, African dancers, African drummers and Fyütch, a Grammy-nominated music and social justice artist, educator and content creator seen on TEDx, MTV, the release said.

The evening concluded with a candle ceremony.
