Montclair Jazz Festival kickoff concert rescheduled for Thursday, July 15
Because of severe weather in the forecast due to Tropical Storm Elsa, the 12th annual Montclair Jazz Festival kickoff concert has been rescheduled from Thursday, July 8 to Thursday, July 15 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Lackawanna Plaza.
The concert will feature Storytellers featuring Alex Laurenzi, opening for Cocomama.
Alex Laurenzi is an award-winning saxophonist composer, and arranger from Mountain Lakes. A long-time student at the Jazz House, Laurenzi is a recent graduate of African-American history at Princeton University and was an active member of the jazz program during all four years. This is the premiere of his new band, Storytellers.
In an announcement of the event, organizers said Cocomama’s eight-piece all-female Latin jazz orchestra "has been described as a virtual United Nations of women, with the members hailing from five countries on four continents. Playing their own kind of World Latin music, powerfully virtuosic yet elegantly musical, Cocomama "brings it" creating a sound that is all at once fierce and beautiful."
On Thursday, July 22, from 6 to 9 p.m. CHiCA Power All-Stars and the Dave Stryker Eight Track Band will celebrate classic pop tunes from the ’70s reimagined.
The CHiCA Power program at Jazz House Kids focuses on music education and empowerment of girls ages 9 through 19. Jazz House Kids Artistic Director Christian McBride said it’s a flagship program for the school that has separated it from many other arts organizations.
