Montclair Kimberley holds off Montclair’s late rush to secure Montclair Cup battle on the ice
Montclair Kimberley controlled most of the play Wednesday night, but Montclair staged a comeback in the final minutes in the annual Montclair Cup.
Montclair Kimberley held on to defeat the Mounties, 4-3, before a packed crowd at Clary Anderson Arena in Montclair. With the win the Cougars raised their record to 5-1-1 while the Mounties dropped to 4-5 on the season.
Cougars junior Jack MacEvoy scored what turned out to be the game winner in the third period.
At the time it was 4-1 Montclair Kimberley, but the Mounties came back in the final minutes as Montclair senior Miles Fletcher scored twice in the final four minutes.
With the Cougars ahead 4-3, Montclair generated a 6-on-5 advantage in the final minute as MacEvoy was called for a penalty and Montclair pulled junior goalie Sam Korenbaum.
But the Montclair Kimberley defense led by senior goalie Aidan Meeker held off the furious comeback attempt by the Mounties to get the equalizer.
For the game the Cougars had four different goal scorers. Along with MacEvoy Montclair Kimberley received goals from junior Sam Rotella, sophomore Nicholas Sykora and junior Gary Hu. Along with Fletcher's pair of goals, Montclair received a goal from sophomore Logan Brown.
